What has been learned is that when other men are vulnerable and talk to men in the perspective that I am you, I am not above you, and I am not talking to you because I am enlightened and you are not, I am you. When in reality all humans experience emotions. We have all been told that men do not have emotions, therefore men have been robbed of their emotions, and that women are the only ones with emotions. The focus is to address yourself and to unpack the toxic masculinity within yourself. When men are talking to other men about this it helps to talk about themselves and not other men. How do we start a conversation on this topic? Ideally, we would love to have an open conversation about this rooted problem in Latin America but having these conversations are very difficult and can do a lot of damage when not done properly. Machismo Culture in Latin American culture, also known as toxic masculinity, is defined as a male exhibiting an overbearing attitude to those who he considers inferior to himself. How do we do this? How do we talk to machismo cultures, how do we break this and start this conversation in a community that tells us not to cry and be strong otherwise you are weak? We need to create a path to start this conversation in our communities and. We need to know how to heal and create a healthier dialog to dismantle intergenerational trauma. Recognizing anterior generational trauma can open up the doors to self-awareness to making healthier choices regarding your mental health. After the first generation of survivors that have experienced this, they can pass that trauma to their children and future generations. Intergenerational trauma is defined as the effects of trauma that are transferred in between generations. ![]() In order to better understand it and begin real hard work on machismo heritage, we have to look at the intergenerational trauma that is rooted in this culture. For many years the Latinx culture has been trapped in this machismo cycle. In other words, by including the LGBTQ community we start to chip away at the machismo culture that surrounds the negativity around discriminating people of this community. ![]() By being able to break this social norm we start to break down the effects that this has on our communities. The Spanish language is both masculine and feminine and having the word Latinx is a step to a more inclusive community. The term was created to be more inclusive of other genders, for example, those who identify as non-binary. What is Latinx and where does this term come from? The term Latinx refers to people who descend from Latin America. ![]()
